VACATION LEAVE: PAYMENT UPON SEPARATION
Employees resigning voluntarily and who give the required notice of intention to resign will receive any vacation credit earned as of the date of resignation. In all instances, the minimum notice requirement is two (2) weeks. The minimum notice requirement for a Department Head is three (3) weeks. Employees who are involuntarily separated may receive payment for accumulated vacation leave subject to the approval of the City Manager.
VACATION LEAVE: PAYMENT UPON DEATH
The estate of an employee who dies while employed by the City shall be entitled to payment of all the accumulated vacation leave credited to the employee's account not to exceed the maximums established in this Handbook.
SICK LEAVE
Sick leave may be granted to an employee absent from work for illness, injury, doctor’s appointments, or when needed to care for an ill family member. A doctor's note may be requested to verify the employee's period of sick leave.
Sick leave may not be used for adverse weather.
In order to be eligible for sick leave with pay, an employee must report the desire to take sick leave to the employee's supervisor prior to or by the beginning of the employee's normal work period.
To facilitate the recruitment of qualified persons with appropriate public-sector experience, the City Manager may authorize the carryover of all or a portion of the unused sick leave that has been certified as accumulated during employment with the immediate past state or local government employer.
SICK LEAVE: ACCRUAL RATE AND ACCUMULATION
Sick leave shall be earned at a rate of one working day per month of service or twelve days per year, with a maximum accrual of 720 hours of sick leave. Fire Department employees earn six (6) shifts per year, with a maximum accrual of 1008 hours of sick leave. Employees begin earning sick leave immediately.
Type of Accrual per Accrual Maximum Service pay period Per Year Allowable Limit Regular Full-time 3.70 12 720 hours Fire Department 5.53 6 shifts 1008 hours
Sick leave may be taken as necessary but may not be extended or overdrawn beyond the accrual at the time of absence. Provided, however, that at the request of the employee any current accrued vacation balance may be applied and extended as though it were sick leave but only in the event of extended illness.
Employees may not borrow against future sick leave or transfer earned sick leave to another employee. All sick leave accumulated by an employee shall end and terminate without compensation when the employee resigns or is separated from the City.
