Overview 
Partnering 
and cost sharing with the city school system to acquire and install a new playground for  
the new school complex has been discussed for some time. During a joint quarterly meeting of the 
c
ity and city school system held on February 24, 2025, this item was discussed again. Once the 
school system receives confirmation from the city of the city’s intent to participate, the school 
system will bid ou t this pr oj ect in a ccordance w ith the ir pol ic ies. T he tot al cost of  the ne w 
pl
ayground and installation is estimated to be about $70,000 with the city funding 50% and the 
c
ity school system funding 50%. The city’s funding will come from the Capital Improvement Fund. 
The city school system will be responsible for purchasing, installing, and maintaining the new 
playground. The city’s responsibility will only be to give t he school system the city’s payment of 
50% of the final cost of the playground and installation. The pr oject is estimated to be completed 
during July 2025. The new playground will be available for general public use after normal school 
hours. See below for t

Following discussion during the March 10, 2025 work session, the consensus was to place this 
item on the March 18, 2025 regular session agenda under New Business for further discussion. 
Action to Consider 
If approved, motion, second, and vote are needed to cost share 50%/50% with the Athens City 
Board of Education to acquire and install a playground in an amount not to exceed $35,000.
