PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Athens has lost one of its most dedicated public servants a nd community leaders, Dr. Janice Sales Hardaway, who passed away on March 13, 2025; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hardaway faithfully served the citizens of Athen s through her ap pointment by the City Council to the Athens Municipal -Regional Planning Commission on July 16, 2013, and gave twelve years of devoted service, including as Vice Chairperson and Secretary; and WHEREAS, she displayed unwavering commitment to her community not only through her leadership on the Planning Commission, but also through her service to numerous organizations including the Athens Utilities Board, Optimist Club, Greater Athens Personnel Asso ciation, Tennessee Wesleyan Business Department, United Way Boards, and the Athens Education Foundation; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hardaway was a beloved wife to her husband Vant, and a devoted moth er and grandmother. She was widely admired for her extraordinary character, her leadership, and her contributions to the betterment of Athens and McMinn County; and WHEREAS, her passing leaves a profound void in the life of this community and in the hearts of a ll those who had the privilege of knowing her; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Larry Eaton, Mayor of the City of Athens, Tennessee, do hereby proclaim that the City of Athens honors the cherished memory of Dr. Janice Sales Hardaway, extends its deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to h er family, and gratefully acknowledges her lifetime of service, lead ership, and devotion to the people of Athens.
