Agenda Item

III E. Approval of Cost Sharing with the Athens City Board of Education to Acquire and Install
a New Playground
Overview
Partnering and cost sharing with the city school system to acquire and install a new playground for
the new school complex has been discussed for some time. During a joint quarterly meeting of the
city and city school system held on February 24, 2025, this item was discussed again. Once the
school system receives confirmation from the city of the city’s intent to participate, the school
system will bid out this project in accordance with their policies. The total cost of the new
playground and installation is estimated to be about $70,000 with the city funding 50% and the
city school system funding 50%. The city’s funding will come from the Capital Improvement Fund.
The city school system will be responsible for purchasing, installing, and maintaining the new
playground. The city’s responsibility will only be to give the school system the city’s payment of
50% of the final cost of the playground and installation. The project is estimated to be completed
during July 2025. The new playground will be available for general public use after normal school
hours. The general playground concept is attached.
