IV. A.  Allowing brewpubs, microbreweries, taprooms, etc. 
 
Overview 
During the December 8, 2025 work session, Main Street Athens requested the City Council to 
consider adding/amending appropriate land use regulations to allow 
brewpubs/microbreweries/taprooms in the city limits as an economic development tool (see 
attachment).  The Athens Municipal Regional Planning Commission discussed the potential 
allowance of brewpubs, microbreweries, taprooms, and similar uses within the City during their 
Jan. 5, 2026 Regional Planning meeting. Following discussion, the Planning Commission 
determined that additional research and further discussion are necessary before an ordinance can 
be drafted and formally considered. 
 
Action to Consider 
Consensus is needed to determine the next step.
