ATHENS CITY COUNCIL
WORK SESSION

Agenda Item
III a. Discussion of Christmas Lights at Regional Park
Overview
Christmas lights at Regional Park have been a topic of discussion for some time. City staff has
researched this issue and found a company from Chattanooga that offers a Christmas light event ,
Nooga Lights, LLC. As a general overview, this company would install and operate a 5,280 linear
foot drive-through light display with music around Regional Par k daily during late November
through late December for a fixed rate per vehicle ($20+/ -) with the proceeds being shared with
the city. The city’s responsibilities would be to market the event on a regional basis , provide
electric services through perhaps rented generators, pay the event’s electric bill, and incur a small
amount of personnel overtime to coordinate the event. The city’s expenses would come from the
Hotel/Motel Tax Fund.
Nooga Lights has conducted similar successful drive -through and walk -through Christmas light
shows in Soddy Daisy and Chattanooga. Attached is their proposal and a proposed route at
Regional Park. The owner, John Haustein, will attend the January 13, 2025 work session to offer
more details of his proposal and answer questions and concerns.
Action to Consider
Consensus to move this item to the January 21, 2025 regular meeting for consideration. If
approved, a Memorandum of Agreement will be prepared detailing each party’s responsibilities.
