ATHENS CITY COUNCIL 
MINUTES OF MEETING 
June 27, 2023 
 
 
The Athens City Council met in called session on June 27, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. with Mayor Sherlin 
presiding.  The invocation was given by Council Member Pelley and upon roll call the following 
members were present: 
 
 Curtis, Pelley, Witt-McMahan, Eaton, Sherlin 
 
The following decision was made and ordered made a part of the records of the Athens City 
Council.  
 
NOTICE OF CALLED MEETING 
 
There will be a called meeting of the Athens City Council at the Athens Municipal Building  
(Burkett Witt Council Chambers located at 815 N. Jackson Street, Athens, Tennessee, 
commencing at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. 
 
The purpose of this meeting is to: 
1. Discuss the pay for employees in the Athens Police Department and approve any 
necessary pay rate adjustments for police employees.
 
2. Consideration of purchasing additional vehicles for Athens Police Department. 
Any interested citizen is invited to be present.

NEW BUSINESS 
 
DISCUSS THE PAY FOR EMPLOYEES IN THE ATHENS POLICE DEPARTMENT AND APPROVE ANY 
NECESSARY PAY RATE ADJUSTMENTS FOR POLICE EMPLOYEES  
 
Mayor Sherlin opened the meeting by stating that they would begin the meeting with a 
discussion of the interviews of each of the candidates and no motions would be accepted until 
after each candidate was discussed.  Mayor Sherlin moved, Council Member Witt-McMahan 
seconded, a motion to increase the pay for certified patrol officers to $22.50 effective for 
the first pay period of July, 2023.  The motion includes that all officers from patrol to 
corporal, SRO officers and detectives making less than $22.50  to be increased to that rate.
