FY 2025-26 Proposed Budget First Reading of Ordinance No. 1141 AN ORDINANCE TO ADOPT A BUDGET AND SET THE TAX RATE ON TAXABLE PROPERTY LOCATED WITHIN THE CORPORATE LIMITS OF THE CITY OF ATHENS, TENNESSEE, FOR THE FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2025 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2026. Overview The FY 2025-26 proposed budget was submitted to the City Council on May 2, 2025 and posted on the city’s website. On May 6, 2025, the City Council conducted a budget work session to review and disc uss the proposed budget. During that meeting, several items were discussed in deta il as listed on the attachment. The proposed budget was revi ewed during the May 12, 2025 work session. From that meeting, the atta chment has been updated to reflect a $5,000 budget request from the Mid East Tennessee Com munity Chorus, a $25,000 budget request from the Council Advisory Committee to conduct a citizen satisfaction survey using a nationally recognized compan y, cost estimates TBD to begin the planning process to extend the Eureka Trail to Market Park, and cost estimates TBD to install a sidewalk on E. Madison from Cook Drive to Dennis Street. The proposed budget will be reviewed further during the May 20, 2025 regular session with the fi rst reading of the budget ordinance and reviewed further during the June 9, 2025 work session. The budget public hearing, second reading of the budget ordinance, and adoption are scheduled to occur during the June 17, 2025 regular session. If approved, the budget will go into effect on July 1, 2025 until June 30, 2026. Following discussion during the May 12, 2025 work session, the consensus was to place this item on the May 20, 2025 regular session under New Business for further discussion and consideration.
