Summary 
Each board/ commission/ committee I foundation / authority etc .... have their own by-laws. The 
group listed above requires a designee or appointee from the Mayor, the Athens City Council, or 
a combination. After the biennial election of mayor, appointments by the newly elected mayor 
are presented. 
By-law Examples 
Board of Zoning Appeals 
The membership shall consist of one (1) designated member of the Planning Commission (the 
Mayor or a Councilperson), 
Athens Regional Planning Commission 
The tenn of the mayor and his designee and the council member selected by the governing body 
shall be for two (2) years each and shall coincide with the biennial election of the office of 
mayor. 
Friendly City Sister Cities Committee 
The Board of Directors of the organization shall consist of .... a member of the Athens City 
Council appointed by the Mayor. .. 
Historic Preservation Commission 
TheAHPC shall consist of .. an Athens City Council member ..... AHPC members shall be 
appointed by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by the Athens City Council. 
Action to Consider 
Motion, second, and vote are needed. A majority of all members of the council shall be required 
to pass this motion.
