18 Source: The Field Studies Council In McMinn County, some areas are more flood‐prone than others. One of the ways of identifying these flood‐prone areas is through determining the county’s 100‐ and 500‐year floodplains. 100‐year floods are calculated to be the level of flood water expected to be equaled or exceeded every 100 years on average, meaning a flood that has a 1% chance of being equaled or exceeded in magnitude in any single year. A 500‐year floodplain has a 0.2% chance. A 100‐year floodplain would include the areas adjoining a stream, river, or watercourse that would be covered by water in the event of a 100‐year fl ood (see diagram below).
