Portion of Parcel 047-226.00 on Velma Road Annexation Area - Annexation Study Page 7 Fire Protection Fire protection for the residents of the City of Athens is provided by the Athens Fire Department. The City of Athens enjoys an ISO rating class of 02/02X and is served by two (2) stations. The area classified as a 02X basically receives the rates of a class 8 because there are no hydrants within 1000 feet of the developable areas and city’s fleet does not have a water tanker. These ISO rating allows those residents of Athen s to receive discounted fire insurance pre miums. Station number one (1) is stationed at the Athens Municipal Building, 815 N. Jackson Stree t, and station number two (2) is stationed at 804 South Congress Parkway. The Athens Fire Department is currently staffed by twenty- one (21) full-time fire fighters, and sixteen (16) volunteer fire fighters. Public Works Department Streets Public Works Depart ment, the City’s largest service department, inclu des the following divisions: sanitation, streets, fleet maintenance, animal Shelter, and administration. The st reets division is divided into four (4) sections: Street Const ruction, Street Maintenance, Street Cleaning, and Traffic Control. The streets division is responsible for the r epair and maintenance of approximately 86 miles of thoroughfares w ithin the co rporate limits of Ath ens, of the 86 miles approximately 22 miles are State and/or Federal Highways that are maintained by the State of Tennessee. Solid Waste Collection The City of Ath ens provides solid waste collection to residential, indust rial, and commercial properties within the corporate limits of Athen s. The City of Athens currently charges $9.50 per month for residential customer solid waste collec tion. The rate for solid waste collection of commercial property is determined by box s ize and the number of times per w eek the container is dumped. Solid waste collection of Commercial property is dumped once (1) per week with the rate based on box size as follows: 4 cubic yards-$44, 6 cubic yards -$66, and 8 cubic yards -$88. If businesses share a dumpster, the cost is fr om $9.50 to $28.50 a month. Solid waste collection of Industrial property is dumped once (1) per week with the rate based on box size a s follows: 4 cubic yards-$54, 6 cubic yards -$88, and 8 cubic yards-$108. Street Lighting The City of Athens curre ntly provides street lighting along city maintained/local str eets within the corporate limits, as well as, for residential, commercial, and industrial establishments. Th e city pays Athens Utilities Board (AUB) a fee based on th e size and type of streetlight and rolls these charges into an investment charge for street lighting facilities that meet TDOT standards. Security Lighting AUB offers security lighting for private property of customers both inside and outside the city li mits. There is no difference in security light charges with reference to inside/outside city limits. Therefore, security lighting is not an applicable cost within th e framework o f an annexation c ost-of-service study. City School System 75
