REF: Disposal of Surplus Firearms 
 
The Athens Police Department has in its possession a large quantity of firearms that has been awarded to the 
department through court cases that are no longer of evidentiary value and a court order has been signed 
through the Criminal Court of McMinn County deeming these firearms to be sold or traded to a licensed law 
enforcement firearms dealer in exchange for instore credit of law enforcement items.  The Athens Police 
Department has also in its possession a large quantity of found or abandoned firearms that need to be 
deemed as surplus and authorized to be sold or traded to a licensed law enforcement firearms dealer.  I have 
attached two lists to this memo identifying each firearm.  The Athens Police Department is requesting the city 
council deem these firearms as surplus, and to allow us to exchange the firearms with Craig’s Firearms at the 
price listed for in-store credit.  Criag’s Firearms currently holds the state contract for the department’s duty 
weapons and ballistic vests’ that the department currently uses.
